County Constabulary Station

Denton Rd, Audenshaw
In 1840, the first policemen were introduced in Denton to replace the ageing village constable. There was public concern about this change and a meeting was called at Denton Chapel (St Lawrence's Church) to discuss the situation. Captain Hyde John Clarke RN JP was in the chair and the outcome was that the policemen were to stay and the first courthouse and lockup were to be provided in 'The City' on Town Ln, Denton.

Later, the police station was relocated to South St (now Stockport Rd) and in the 1860s there was another move to premises on Denton Rd, immediately inside the Audenshaw boundary. This was known as the County Constabulary Station and this remained open until well into the 20th century, even though a larger new-build police station was authorised for Stockport Rd, Denton, in 1896. There was also a temporary police station on Hyde Rd, Denton, that closed when the new police station on Stockport Rd opened.
