Victoria Park, Band Stand & Millennium Sundial

Victoria St, Denton
The site of Victoria Park was purchased in 1886 for £6,750 and it first opened as a recreation ground on Whit Friday, 14 Jun 1889. Between 1907 and 1913 improvements were affected, which included the addition of a band stand. On completion of these improvements, it was opened as a park in 1913 but the actual date is uncertain.

The band stand was designed and supplied by Hill & Smith Ltd, Ironfounders of Brierley Hill, 1½ miles north east of Stourbridge in Staffordshire (now part of Dudley in the West Midlands). This firm also manufactured iron fencing and road safety equipment.

It stands on an octagonal plinth and it has wrought/cast iron balustrading attached to cast-iron pillars that support a domed roof topped by an ornamental weather vane. It was erected by Hill & Smith Ltd between 1907 and 1913 at a cost of £172 10s 0d.
The band stand is listed Grade II, List Entry No. 1163716.

In 2007 band stand was restored to its original condition by means of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Tameside MBC's preservation of Historic Buildings Fund. The restoration work took three months to complete, the work being undertaken by Dorothea Restorations Ltd of Whaley Bridge, High Peak, Derbyshire, who are specialists in architectural and engineering metalwork conservation.

During the restoration, the layers of paint were analised and the results enabled it to be painted in its original colours.

On completion of the restoration, a celabratory event was held in the afternoon of the 16 Jun 2007 with family entertainment being provided by Denton Brass Band, Musical Youth and a merry-go-round.
