Denton Methodist Church Sunday School

Patterson St, off Hyde Rd
The Wesleyans founded their first church on Ashton Rd in 1816. A deed was signed conveying the land to Samuel Leech of Ashton-under-Lyne. It is believed that beforehand a room in one of the cottages that stood on the site was being used for services. The first trustees of the church were John Dearden, hatter; Zachariah Peacock, shopkeeper; John Blackshaw, hatter; William Whitelegge, shoemaker, Henry Bond, hatter; and John Marshall, warehouseman. On the 7 Aug 1871, John Lever laid the foundation stone of a second church to be built on Hyde Rd. The Revd J Ratenbury held the first service in the new building on the 27 Jun 1872. Meanwhile, the first church was sold to Denton and Haughton Co-operative Society for £500. In 1882, Trinity House was completed next door to the church on Hyde Rd and this became the home of the incumbent minister. The first minister to live at Trinity House was the Revd J Dixon. The word 'Trinity' was dropped from the name of the church and in 1932 the Wesleyan Methodists joined with the Primitive Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church.

The foundation stone of the Sunday school on Patterson St, was laid on the 24 May 1873 by Sir James Watts of Abney Hall, Cheadle, and it opened on the 29 Dec 1873 (Middleton, 1936, p.81). Eventually the Sunday School became a council school and it was extended in 1914.

Sir James Watts (6 Mar 1804-7 Apr 1878) was the Lord Mayor of Manchester (1855/57) and the High Sheriff of Lancashire (1871). He was the owner of S & J Watts Ltd who built the Watts Warehouse on Portland St, Manchester.
