Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co

Market St, Denton, on the Victoria St corner
The Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co was incorporated in 1829 with an office in Stockport. It was bank policy that a new branch could only be opened when there were a sufficient number of shareholders in the town. When a new branch was established, a local board of directors was appointed whose role was to oversee the management of that branch.

Trade directories show that a branch of this bank was open on Market St, Denton, by 1873 and it was essentially a sub-branch of Hyde. At this time John Alexander Hunt was the manager and William Tweedale was the cashier and accountant. By 1911 the manager was Joseph Dunn.

In 1924 the company name, ‘Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co’, was shortened to ‘District Bank’. In Aug 1935 the County Bank Ltd (formerly the Manchester & County Bank) announced it was to amalgamate with the District Bank and consequently two branches of the same company would then be trading about 38-yards away from each other. It is probably around this time that the decision was made to close the premises on Market St and transfer the business to the nearby premises on Manchester Rd.

The Latin motto, DECUS PRUDENTIÆ MERCES, below the crest means 'Honour is the reward of prudence.'

The foundation courses of this building are constructed of stretcher bond engineering blue brick capped by a course of bevelled coping stones to allow water to run off. Above the course of coping stones, the building is constructed of header bond where the header bricks are set in courses that are offset by half the brick width. The window surrounds are of red sandstone construction with flat lintels on the Market St frontage and pointed arches on the Victoria St side. The main entrance on Market St is of stone construction and above the lintel there is a recessed stone tablet carved with the crest of the bank. The side entrance on Victoria St is also of stone construction and the door has six panels. The slate roof has dormers set into it with triformed frames.
