The pawnbroker's shop on the left is occupied by James Matthew Warham* and Booth's fish shop is on the right. The houses in the distance, centre right, are on Lime Grove on the far side of Nelson St.

Lupton St commemorates Gabriel Lupton (1766-1837) a businessman from the village of Nun Monkton (8 miles NW of York) who settled in Denton. In 1791 he purchased land on the east side of Ashton Rd adjoining Crown Point on which he built shops and houses. He also became the owner and landlord of the George III Inn (aka King's Head Inn) at Crown Point on the corner of Manchester Rd and Stockport Rd.

*James Matthew Warham
James Matthew Warham was born at Miles Platting, Manchester, on the 23 Dec 1879 to Edwin Smith Warham and Grace Ramsay Brown who were married at Christ Church, Crewe, in 1871. He married Edith Annie Buckton at Christ Church, Bradford, Manchester, on the 3 Sep 1902. By 1911 he was resident with his wife and family on Manchester Rd, Denton. By 1939 James Matthew Warham had left his shop to become a haulage contractor and during World War Two he was an ARP Warden.
