Gibraltar Mill stands on the far side of the river Tame in Gee Cross, Hyde, and it was built in the late 18th century.

The building to the right of the lane is Gibraltar Lodge and it stands on the far side of the river Tame.

Gibraltar Mill, Gee Cross, Hyde, early 20th century.

Tithe Apportionments for c.1841 record that the landowners of Gibraltar Mill were the Executors of the late John Sidebotham and that the occupier was William Sidebotham.

By 1891 Gibraltar Mill had 28,674 spindles and 481 looms.

The Gibraltar Mill Company Ltd was incorporated in 1872 and the founder was Francis William Ashton, a merchant, cotton spinner and manufacturer. It was struck off the Register of Companies in Dec 1917 to be replaced by Gibraltar Mills Ltd which was dissolved in 1924.

Gibraltar Mill was then occupied by the Swan Lane Spinning Company (1920) Ltd who used it for doubling yarn. This is where two or more strands of roving or sliver are twisted together and drawn out using a doubling frame. This company was based on Manchester Road, Walkden, Lancashire.

The Swan Lane Spinning Company (1920) Ltd was incorporated on the 9 Feb 1920 and it was dissolved on the 25 Jun 2019.

Gibraltar Mill ceased operating as a textile mill in c.1959/60 and it was then occupied by Brooksons Poultry Appliances and Brooksons Sunshine Eggs Ltd. In c.1966/67 the mill was condemned and demolished.

In the top right, Gibraltar Ln crosses the river on Gibraltar Bridge and then veers to the right to access Apethorn House and from there a footpath climbs up the valley side to join the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal. In the centre left, Apethorn Ln connects Stockport Road, Polebank, Hyde, to Gibraltar Mill, via Gibraltar Row, and there is a mill pond on the near side of the lane.

Apethorn Mills were in business by the early 1840s, at which time Samuel Ashton was the owner and occupier. Apethorn Mills Co Ltd was incorporated in 1890 with 40,000 spindles. In 1905 the company went into liquidation.

By 1911 Apethorn House was the residence of James Pilling (59), a cotton mill manager from Radcliffe, and his wife Annie (42) from Heywood. By 1920 it was the residence of Camille Verbeke who was in business with Alfred Jules Louise Moreau of Harman Street, Manchester, as cotton yarn merchants under the style of Verbeke & Moreau.
